Aikido is a
martial art derived from Samurai of ancient Japan. Its technical foundations are traced
to Aiki-Jujutsu. Aiki-jujutsu was practiced by Prince Tejin, son of Emperor
Seiwa (850-880 AD) and passed on the generation of the Minamoto family.
Morihei
Ueshiba (1883-1968) is the founder of
modern day aikido. Training for years in aiki-jujutsu and considered a master
in this and a number of other arts.
O-Sensei ( as he is called by students of budo worldwide) combined his technical skill with his belief
of spiritual development to become aikido. Loosely translated aikido means “the
way of harmony with the spirit”.
One of
O-Sensei’s top students was Gozo Shioda Sensei (Kancho). In 1955, after
training for many years and receiving 9th dan from Ueshiba, Kancho formed the
Aikido Foundation. Kancho’s style of aikido is known as “Yoshinknan”. “Yo”
means cultivating. “Shin” means spirit or mind. “Kan” means house. Yoshinkai aikido is located in Tokyo Japan and is taught to the Tokyo Riot
Police, Female Police Officers and other law enforcement throughout Japan and the world.
The emphasis
of Yoshinkai aikido is the fundamental movement and solid basic stance (kamae),
the study of human relations and the
students own conduct of life. Cooperation and harmony are crucial key to the
study of Yoshinkai aikido. Yoshinkai aikido is a noncompetitive, non violent, extremely
effective self defense martial art.
Presently,
Yashuhiza Shioda, son of Gozo Shioda, is the Dojocho at the Yoshinkai honbu
dojo in Japan.
